  • Web & Internet Terminology: M to Z

    Web Glossary

Meta-Search Engine.   Search engines that submit your keywords to search, on several search engine databases. A time-saver for simple keyword searches (one or two keywords or phrases in " ").

Newsgroup.   A discussion group operated through the Internet. Not to be confused with listservers which operate through e-mail.

PDF, .pdf, pdf File, Portable Document Format.   A file format developed by Adobe Systems, that is used to capture many kinds of documents with the original formatting and can't be altered. Viewing a PDF file requires Acrobat Reader, which is built into most browsers and can be downloaded free from www.adobe.com.

Plug-In.   An application built into a browser or added to a browser to enable it to interact with a special file type (such as a movie, sound file, Word document, etc.)

Search Engine Directory Service.   Search engine services store web page content and keywords to their databases. When people are searching the internet, these directories are accessed and results closely matching the requested keywords are delivered to the browser. Some directory services allow free web address and/or keyword submissions to their directories, and others charge for this service.

Server, Web Server, Host, Web Host.   A computer assigned an IP address, and connected to the Internet so that it can provide documents via the World Wide Web. Web servers are a close equivalent to a "publisher" in the print world.

Site, Web Site.   This term is often used to mean a "web page," but there is a difference. A web page is one file that you might find on the Web. A "site," is a collection of related pages one can link to within that site.

Spiders, Crawlers, Robots.   Computer programs, also known as as "bots", "knowledge-bots" or "knowbots", are used by search engines to roam the World Wide Web via the Internet, visit sites and databases, and keep search engine databases of web pages up to date. They detect new pages, update known pages, and delete obsolete ones. Their findings are integrated into the search engine database.

Some larger search engines operate several robots continuously, and the Web is so large that it can take months for spiders to index a site, resulting in "out-of-datedness" in all search engines.

URL, Uniform Resource Locator.   The unique web site address of any Web document. The logic to the layout of a URL:
    1. Type of file (http://, ftp:// or telnet://)
    2. Domain name (the server where a file is located on the Internet)
    3. Path or directory on the computer to this file
    4. Name of file and its file extension (such as .html or .htm)
Usenet .   A bulletinboard-like network featuring thousands of "newsgroups."
