Internet, internet.   The "Internet" is the collection of interconnected networks that use TCP/IP protocols and that evolved from the ARPANET of the late 60’s and early 70’s. An "internet" is any computers connected (networked) to each other, which may or may not be part of the Internet.

Intranet.   An intranet is a private network in a company or organization that uses the same kinds of software that you would find on the public Internet, but is only for internal use. An intranet may be on the Internet or may simply be a network.

Every machine on the Internet has a unique IP address. Most machines also have textual Domain Names which are easier for people to remember.

ISP, Internet Service Provider.   A company that sells Internet connections. This can be via dial-up modem through your regular telephone line, or faster, Internet connectivity is available via cable, DSL, ISDN, web-TV, T1 or T3. Often ISPs will include a web page hosting service (free or relatively inexpensive for personal web pages).
